Welcome to Atlanta! This is in the afternoon…

He got his wish.

Davi Millsaps looked tired and frustrated before his heat. Little did he know he would bag the biggest win of his career in Atlanta!

The Throttle Chronicles- Atlanta Supercross 2008
By Jason Fordney
Baltimore-Washington Airport sat in sullen early morning darkness as I rolled up for my flight to Atlanta. Four thirty a.m. on a Saturday morning is not a busy time around the airport, except for the skycaps, counter people and airport workers that maintain their tireless, timeless airport schedule.

Lugging a laptop, two cameras, and a hastily packed bag of clothes, I was off to the Atlanta Supercross. Sipping the last few drops of my early morning coffee as I meandered through the airport, I took my place at the window seat, pulled out a moto mag and settled in for the flight.

By 8 a.m. I was driving my rental car through downtown Atlanta. Picking up a Dodge Avenger that was way nicer then my truck back home I hit the gas and came upon the skyscrapers of Atlanta with a grin on my face. I knew the people in Atlanta (and the Southeast region) to be friendly folks so I thought I would roll up to the hotel room I had reserved and ask if I could jump in a little early…like 9 a.m.

I had only gotten a few hours sleep the night before due to the redeye nature of my flight (travel hint- book early morning flights on expedia.com and get great prices on flight, hotel, and rental car packages. We got ours for $323 including round trip ticket, one night in a decent hotel, and the hot Gold Avenger I was now wheeling).
Unfortunately the lady at the desk somewhat harshly rejected my suggestion of occupying the room seven hours before check-in, so I resigned myself to heading straight to the stadium and taking some photos.

Grabbing my bags I wearily began my trudge from the hotel lobby back to the parking garage when another lady called me over, said nothing, and handed me a room key. I was confused. “Come back later?” She shook her head and I was off to my room. Thanks lady. Now I could take a nap for an hour or so before I hit the race.

After checking out my camera gear, I discovered I had brought the wrong charger for the “good” camera and the unit was having some other problems. I was not shooting on the floor of the stadium anyhow so I pulled out my trusty Cybershot to try and document some of the action.

The race
People criticize Supercross as not being real moto, and they are right. The answer is Supercross is something unique, and vital for the sport. If you can’t see the value of 60.000 people showing up to cheer on the racers you might be getting a little too cynical. The excitement and hugeness of the stadium is kind of thrilling and intoxicating. (The beer is too, and there was plenty of that in evidence).

In my trips to Georgia I have become familiar with the certain “type” of Atlantan you see in droves at a Supercross. Good ole boys come to mind. Georgians are very friendly people and one thing is for sure- they are crazy for Supercross. And also Coors Light, the Rockstar Energy Girls, motorsickles, Nachos, BBQ, and hot dogs. And thousands of pretty women.

I saw some new former amateur faces in the Lites heats, such as Sean Hackley, Kyle Keylon, and Trey Canard (Trey won the Lites main event in his first attempt!)
There of course was also the Lites class favorite and current champ, Ryan Villopoto, who had a bad night in the main and crashed out of the race. Villopoto will no doubt bounce back strongly and be a contender in the championship. Also in the house was Josh Grant, Martin Davalos (3rd in the main), and Ryan Sipes (second in the main). KTM appears to be on fire with its 250 bike in Motocross Lites. New Rockstar Makita Suzuki Lites rider Nico Izzi also finished 8th in the main.

“DV12″ was also in the house for Suzuki (finishing 9th in the main). Andrew Short rode to a strong third in the main, and Torco Honda legend Kevin Windham yanked down a second place in what is shaping up to be an awesome season for K-Dub.

I was really happy to see Ricky Carmichael in the house and doing laps on a Suzuki RM250, my personal ride and one of the last remaining two bangers. Wonder what kind of message RC was sending by hitting the track on the two-stroke. I have heard him say he’s a two stroke guy, and nobody can ride one faster than the G.O.A.T. The crowd ate up both his mid-Afternoon and nightshow rides. At one point he did a few laps with Chad Reed, who didn’t get half the cheers of RC when he pulled off.

The Live Nation show was an eye popper, with the lights, giant flames, fireworks, and all the trimming of a rock concert/motocross race. It’s a fun time and Atlanta ‘08 did not fail to deliver.

The story of Davi Millsaps storybook win sent shock waves through the motocross world, even though Chad Reed had crashed out of the Supercross main on a “wall of death”- the same one that claimed Villopoto earlier. Villopoto was shaking his wrist after spending some time lying on the stadium floor after flying off his Kawasaki 250. Villy had a bad night, suffering a DNF after being nailed on the ground by the front tire of Josh Grant’s Honda.

The James Stewart-designed track was challenging and fast, with a long start in to an intense left handed sand turn. The big triple and the finish line double out of a bowl turn provided some sketchy landings and lots of bar banging.

Overall the Atlanta Supercross was a huge hit. Said to be the largest attendance on the tour, Atlanta has gained a reputation as a key east coast Supercross. If you missed it this year, don’t forget it will be back next February.

With the four-strokes still pounding in my head I made my way through heavy traffic, weaving through the streets of downtown Atlanta. The bars were hopping and I saw a few racing jerseys making their way through the throngs of people. Too tired myself to sample any nightlife, I headed to my hotel and tried to get some sleep before my 4 a.m. wakeup to fly home.

I slept through my alarm and woke up at 6 a.m., just as my flight was taking to the sky. The little sleep-in cost me some duckets, and I spent all day sleeping on a bench in the Atlanta airport waiting for another flight back to Baltimore. But it was worth it. See ya there next year!

It’s been four long years since Yamaha’s Chad Reed pulled down a Supercross win in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, but carrying strong momentum into the February 23 race he is a heavy favorite in the high-flying and hard-fought 2008 Monster Energy Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship.
Even though Reed lost to Torco Racing Fuels’ Kevin Windham in Houston this past weekend, he continues to impress with inspired rides.
The last time Reed won here in 2004 also marked the season of his first and last (so far) title in the Supercross class—and since then Reed has dedicated his life to earning another one for his team sponsor, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians/L&M Racing.
In Atlanta Reed will face the usual tough competition in the form of Windham, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry, and Team Honda sensation Davi Millsaps.
But Reed’s quest for a win in the “Peach State” will be aided by a thinning of the herd in the top ranks of the Supercross Class since last year. Two of last year’s top three— Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart (1st place in 2007) and Makita Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael (2nd place)—will not be on the starting line this year.
Stewart, who took last year’s win at the Georgia Dome as well as the Supercross title, is on the sidelines with a knee injury and RC, “the Greatest of All Time” retired at the end of 2007 after running a partial series.
While Stewart watches from the couch and tells his competition on TV that he will be back, and RC took to racing stock cars, Reed has been on a tear so far in 2008.
The transplanted Australian has ridden effectively and consistently all season, pulling out inspiring wins even after crashing hard, or battling through the pack in severely muddy conditions as he did in San Francisco last month.
Reed has been living in the shadow of Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart since his last win in Atlanta in 2004, a win Reed captured when RC was out with an injury and Stewart was still in the Lites class. Reed finished second to Carmichael’s Suzuki in Atlanta in 2005 and 2006, and last year was relegated to third behind first-place finisher Stewart and RC in second.
Atlanta will also feature the first Lites Class East Coast race of the year, pitting defending champion, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto against some new faces including Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Nico Izzi, and Yamaha of Troy/Boost Mobile’s Tyler Bowers.
Villopoto, who also added a 2007 Motocross of Nations overall to his rapidly-growing list of wins, will be twisting the throttle off his KX250F in pursuit of yet another title to add to his mantle.

Sidewinder “Smart Chain” for MX/Off-Road

Sidewinder is introducing a “smart”, new concept for reducing friction, drag, and horsepower loss in sealed racing chains. The idea is to provide the longest lasting, sealed-for-life chain, with very high tensile strength ratings and yet achieve the N.Z.D. (near zero drag) of an unsealed motocross-type chain. Sidewinder has achieved this goal with their new “Smart Chain.” The “Smart Chain” will satisfy the demands of the racer/rider seeking maximum horsepower without compromising life and durability. Here is how we did it. After a five year research program, Sidewinder engineers devised a method to impregnate O-rings with patented, temperature-sensitive synthetics taken from their “SS-51” chain lube formula. As the chain operates, it heats up. In less than a minute, the thermally sensitive “Smart Rings” react to the temperature rise by triggering the release of the embedded slippery synthetic lubricant. The pressure points where the “Smart Rings” are squeezed between the sideplates are instantly lubricated. The friction and drag are reduced to near zero resulting in the transmission of maximum power to the rear wheel. You go faster.

These clever, little O-rings are pretty “smart.” Besides being self-lubricating, the circular, round-cross-section, O-style ring provides a much longer lasting seal than the X, D, T, and Z rings. This extended life will translate into big savings for the rider by minimizing replacement costs. The new “Smart Chain” has also demonstrated a greater resistance to damage inflicted by harsh solvents, chemicals, and UV exposure. Running a “Smart Chain” that delivers more power and saves you money will also prove that you are a lot smarter too. Now available from Sidewinder Racing Products in 428, 520, 525, and 530 pitch in four increasing tensile strengths from 7,000 to 16,000 lbs. Pricing begins at $109.99. For additional, detailed tech info, contact Sidewinder Products at 630-513-1000 www.SidewinderSprockets.com

Toyota On Board Again As Title Sponsor For Upcoming 2007-08 AX Series
- press release -

Toyota to Continue Its Support of the Sport & Introduce the New “Toyota Certified Fan Challenge” Beginning at the Des Moines, Iowa, Toyota AMA Arenacross Opener

AURORA, Ill. (Nov 1, 2007) – Live Nation’s Motor Sports division announced today that Toyota will return as the title sponsor of the 2007-2008 Toyota AMA Arenacross Series beginning with the Nov. 2-4 Des Moines, Iowa, opener and running through the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series finals in Green Bay, Wisc., March 14-16.

Fans of Toyota AMA Arenacross will continue to see a great presence from Toyota - both behind the scenes and during the evening pro-race activities and Sunday amateur racing programs. This year Toyota will offer a photo opportunity so fans can take home a souvenir of their race experience and give-away a Toyotacross Prize Pack during the Friday and Saturday main events. All fans in attendance can enter-to-win at any of the Toyota kiosks on the concourse. And as always Toyota will continue to support the athletes with a rider lounge and catering for the both nights, as well as Sunday’s amateur day

“Toyota has become synonymous with the sport of professional arenacross racing, and Live Nation Motor Sports is eager to assist Toyota in moving forward with its brand recognition goals through the title sponsorship of the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series,” said Todd Jendro, Senior Director, Two Wheel Operations for Live Nation Motor Sports. “Our fan base with the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series is extremely brand loyal, and we’ve received nothing but positive feedback over the past two seasons in regards to Toyota as the title sponsor of the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series.”

As mentioned by Jendro, the correlation between pick-up trucks and dirt bikes is a highly recognizable lifestyle image, paramount with the much-sought-after action sports demographic. Toyota believes in this and delivers a product line that is as bold, rugged and competitive as the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series racers themselves.

”Toyota is looking forward to being the AMA Arenacross title sponsor for the third year in a row,” said Paul Czaplicki, Engagement Marketing Manager for Toyota. As another season of great racing and exciting competition are upon us, Toyota is proud to support such a great sport and its fans, and to present the 2008 champion with a brand new Toyota Tacoma at the end of the season.”

In addition to supporting the popular motorsport as the title sponsor, Toyota will – for the third consecutive year – reward the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series’ overall champion with a brand-new Toyota Tacoma truck at the Green Bay finals. Past winners include Chad Johnson (2006) and Danny Smith (2007).

“It’s all about fun with Toyota at the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series events,” said Jayme Dalsing, director of arenacross for Live Nation. “We’ll have the Toyota Tacoma truck for fans to check out, Toyota Arenacross register-to-win booths where fans have a chance to win all sorts of cool prizes and, of course, the new Toyota Certified Fan Challenge.”

Tickets for Nov. 2-4 Toyota AMA Arenacross at Wells Fargo Arena are available through www.arenacross.com, at the Wells Fargo Arena Ticket Office, online at www.dahlstickets.com, all Des Moines-area Dahl’s Grocery Stores or charge by phone at 1-866-55-DAHLS. Doors open Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Sunday at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday tickets are $20 for all Gold Circle seats, $16 for Mid Level seats/$8 for kids Mid Level seats. Sunday tickets are $16 for adults, $8 for kids. All seats $2 more day of show. Note: Kids = children ages 2-12.

“Nitro Circus: Thrillbillies” Review

Ozzy, Poison, AC/DC….Pastrana?

The phenomenon that is Travis Pastrana has produced another Nitro Circus DVD with his crew of insane, adrenaline-junkie friends, and Moto East was lucky enough to attend one of two world premieres at the Annapolis Mall last Sunday.

This event had a real down-home feel, what with Travis in the house shaking hands and literally holding babies, Mom and Dad Pastrana, budding action sports girl star Jolene Van Vugt, and the entire Nitro Circus crew on hand. Even the “talking beer keg” was in the house, giving away schwag and pumping up the crowd.

For the fifth installment of Godfrey Films’ Nitro Circus series, Travis takes flight! This DVD has the craziest base jumping and sky diving scenes yet, especially the one where Travis leaps from a small plane above Puerto Rico with no parachute, wearing nothing but shorts and a pair of socks. Of course, he makes it safely to the ground without a scratch.

Seeing some of this stuff on the big screen, with the crunch of classic heavy metal by the bands listed above (along with the Ramones, Motley Crue and others) was really cool. Probably the sickest scene is the simultaneous bike, off road truck, monster truck jump that is a dizzying display of aerial aerobatics and timing. If one guy messed up, it could be bad…

Other stuff: Big Wheel Racing, the Slip and Slide, snowboarding, blowing stuff up, some crazy snowmobile jumping, bikes going off cliffs, people going off cliffs, tower jumping, car jumping, jumping off just about anything you can think of…

It still amazes me how Travis withstands the punishment his body takes. In this movie alone, he takes some big hits, especially the backflip gone wrong sequence that shows him in slow motion being pounded into the ground by his Suzuki and being knocked unconscious. After a while he staggers to his feet, half dizzy. Apparently his self-described “Shield of Invincibility” was in effect.

Just another day at the office for Travis…

33 countries competing for the Chamberlain Trophy

FUNCHAL, 24 August 2007 – 33 teams have entered in the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations which will be held on the 22nd and 23rd September in Budds Creek, Maryland, USA. This unique event is the only occasion for fans to see the best riders on the planet compete together in teams.

Amongst the 99 world class riders, Carmichael, Villopoto, Ferry, Ramon, Strijbos, De Dycker, Coppins, Townley, Cairoli, Philippaerts, Pourcel, Searle, Mackenzie, Langston, Barragan, Leok, Reed, McFarlane and Bill will be fiercely battling to take home the most exclusive trophy in the world.
After the magnificent 2006 edition of the FIM Motocross of Nations in England, the 2007 event looks like it’s going to be really special. Having 33 teams enter is extraordinary, and the pre-selling of tickets and camping is even higher than the same time last year, everyone’s going to love it. The media interest is exploding all magazines and the television coverage will be more than ever, more than 150 countries will be covered. The Budds Creek (organizer), AMA, FIM and Youthstream are working tightly to make an extraordinary event which will stay in the history of Motocross.

Giuseppe Luongo, the President of Youthstream, said, “Everybody loves the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations, and there’s no question why; having the best riders from all over the world racing together, having the hottest fans all together, having the most prestigious title being fought after and it’s the last race of the season, these are the perfect ingredients for the best race of the year and this race will be just that. I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure you all are too. I wish the teams great racing and the fans a great weekend.”

Youthstream thanks all the National Federations who have entered in the MXON, RED BULL as title sponsor of the event, KTM, FOX and all other sponsors supporting the MXON, media, and especially the American press who have made very big efforts in promoting this event, and to all the fans who have shown such big interest in the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations.

“I am very satisfied with the high number of entries”, says Dr. Wolfgang Srb, FIM/CMS President, “It proves that the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations is the most important race of the year. I trust that Budds Creek and AMA will do what they can to produce an outstanding event that will be remembered for a long time.”

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart is definitely out of the picture at tomorrow’s Millville National, as an injury sustained last week at Washougal has affected his knee. This throws the championship up for grabs, since Stewart’s teammate Tim Ferry is only seven points down in the 2007 AMA Outdoor Championship, and Factory Honda’s Andrew Short is in the game too, only eight points behind Ferry with plenty of races left to make up time.
One things Stewart’s injury, as well as his possible departure for the rest of the ‘07 National season proves, is that anything can happen in motocross. Many people said that Stewart was a shoo-in for this year’s title, but unfortunately crashes have taken their toll on the ‘07 Supercross champ.
James’ injury was such a freak thing, caused by a rock rolling out and hitting his front tire in a medium speed corner. For a guy whose been through the crashes he has, it’s ironic that a insignificant rock has changed the course of the 2007 outdoor motocross season.

Standings as of Millville Aug. 12, 2007
1 290 J. Stewart 18(4) 22(2) 40(1) 25(1) 0(35) 25(8)
2 283 T. Ferry 10(11) 25(1) 35(5) 22(2) 22(2) 44(1)

Stewart Press Release:
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Stewart to Sit Out Millville

MILLVILLE, Minn. (August 11, 2007) - Monster Energy Kawasaki today announced that James Stewart will not race the ninth round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship this weekend due to a knee injury sustained at the last race in Washougal, Wash.

Stewart, who sustained the injury in the closing moments of the second moto at Washougal, visited with specialists the past two weeks while resting his knee.

“Kawasaki’s goal, and James’ goal, was to be out here racing this weekend to be able to salvage enough points to keep his championship hopes alive,” said Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Manager Mike Fisher. “Unfortunately, after riding on Friday, James does not feel he has enough stability in his left knee to make it though two 30-minute motos.”

He added, “Since 100 percent of our efforts were to try to make it to this round our plan for the future has yet to be decided.”

Any east coast racer that has ever frequented Mountaineer Raceway in Inwood, WV knows who Chris Snider is. For several years Chris has been the face in the sign-up booth and the man on the tractor at Mountaineer.
Having recently parted ways with Mountaineer, Chris wants you to know about a new motocross training service he is starting up, called “Chris Snider’s Motocross Boot Camp.” Chris is currently training national motocross contender Randall Everett in his bid to become a pro, and he has years and years of motocross knowledge under his belt. Chris has extensive knowledge of bike set up, training, riding technique, and other techniques to put you or your kid in the winner’s circle.
There are rumors that this boot camp will be held at a new facility in the area, but the plans are still under development. Check back to www.motoeastmag.com often for more details.

All this week we will be adding video from the MDRA series Round 2 at Mountaineer, WV. And we will be shooting video at several upcoming rounds.

Once you see this video, we guarantee you will want to come give Mountaineer a try. Over the past several years Chris Snider and his crew have turned this place into a motocross wonder-park we have grown to love.

Mountaineer is easily accessed off of Interstate 81 and has become one of the best run facilities in the area. Thanks to Larry and Karla Cain, Bryant, and all the people that work so hard to give us this great place to ride and hang out.
We’ll let Chris pitch his own story over at www.mountaineeraceway.com

Misfit was nice enough to shoot all this video, even after crashing out of his Vet C race.
This was the best day I have ever had at the race track. It rocked.

Great riding from Patrick Wastler (91 Honda), Gregg Duffy (150 Suz), Derrick Wile (114 Honda). Duffy makes some aggressive passes stick and takes the win. Watch Duffy, this kid is riding fast and smooth.

Click here for a short video preview of track changes

Next race at Mountaineer is April 29 MDRA.

We’ll be shooting some Moto East video!

There are more changes to Mountaineer Raceway coming soon, including dividing the present track into a Supercross track, and a more spectator-friendly “National” track version of the current layout on the other side of the hill. We’ve seen some of the new jump situations, and it looks cool!
The Supercross track will be in the lower area of the current track by the old start, and is going to have some challenge to it, if the new whoop section is any indication. The new big uphill double, which replaced the old favorite step-up, looks to be pretty spectacular. There will be an all new start moved up to the top of the hill, near the new GP-style turns.
Most of your favorite jumps at Mountaineer are still there, but be ready for some new terrain when you come around your first lap at Mountaineer!
